The "River of Painted Birds"
Quite similar to the situation with the Mi Movistar - Colombia migration, Mi Movistar - Uruguay was looking for an update from their previous, outdated, mobile self-service solution to MobileAware’s self-service product.
During this migration, the design team and I were able to illustrate that their users would be able to more effectively, and quickly, accomplish the tasks that they would do on a regular basis in their previous app. Some of these tasks would be: checking their mobile, pre-paid, balance; topping-up their account; changing their plan, if need be; and being able to rectify issues regarding their account, without contacting the Telefonica support desk. The Mi Movistar - Uruguay application was also the test-bed for the app metrics platform; which the design team leveraged to identify most trafficked screens and user flows, and prioritize which overall features should be revisited and improved.
This migration project wasn't without it's challenges - for all teams involved. The main challenge that the design team faced while working through this project was how to scale the overall user experience of the application platform to work with the limited services from Mi Movistar - Uruguay. The team and I (as well as the integration platform team) warned that, with the Uruguay back-end services being so limited, the experience would not be as rich or as helpful as it was designed. Still, we forged ahead with the drastically limited experience of the initial release of the Uruguay app, in hopes that when the technical team(s) at Movistar Uruguay see how limited the services are for mobile, that they would work to expand them - thus giving their subscribers a much more rich and engaging experience.
Fun fact: The name ‘Uruguay’ comes from the Uruguay River which is thought to mean ‘river of the painted birds’ in the Guarani language. (from "Top 10 facts about Uruguay" published in the Thursday, Jun 19, 2014 online edition of the Express. Link
